Department of Photonics and Nanoelectronics
Previously, a few universities tried spinning off photonics as an independent discipline, but Hanyang University’s Department of Photonics and Nanoelectronics is the first of its kind in Korea to be established as a department that offers convergence education that blends in engineering.
The department offers provides specialized education in three distinct tracks: the “IoT Optical Engineering,” “Nano Semiconductor,” and “Laser Optical Engineering.”
In particular, what is noteworthy is that creativity and active problem-solving skills are honed through not only theoretical, but also practical and hands-on education involving lab projects.
Moreover, the program has a capstone project, which blends the knowledge students earn over the course of their studies, and undergraduate students participate in cutting-edge research conducted in either a Spectroscopy Lab, Computational Quantum Materials Lab, Semiconductor Photon Applications Lab, Advanced Laser Lab, Nanomaterial Characteristics Lab, Spectroscopy Lab, etc. This helps to improve their ability to apply what they learn and provides some much-needed research and development experience.
In collaboration with the Next-generation Photonics Technology Center on campus, the department provide hands-on training in cutting-edge technologies, and offers students space for creative experiments - the Nano Photonics Studio - where they can try out their own designs, which is equipped with 3D printers and various computer software.
