College of Computing

“In each stage of Industrial Revolution, only countries that adequately trained the necessary talent were able to led the world.
Keys to our latest Industrial Revolution, Industry 4.0, are software and artificial intelligence.
Hanyang University's ERICA Campus established the College Computing featuring the Division of Computer Science, Division of Media, Culture and Design Technology, and Department of Artificial Intelligence in order to train software experts who can lead industries through the Industry 4.0 era.
The Division of Computer Science was the first computer-focused department established at Hanyang University in 1985, and it has been training numerous computer and software experts ever since. The division will continue to carry on the legacy and traditions of the university in computer science.
The Division of Media, Culture and Design Technology aims to train experts who can create new technologies and services that improve the quality of human life using creative and convergent thinking as well as software technology.
Moreover, the College of Computing has a Division of Artificial Intelligence (established in 2021) aimed at developing experts in artificial intelligence who can lead future society by developing new and effective artificial intelligence technology.
The College of Computing also has a new industrial software convergence major and an industrial artificial intelligence convergence major as ‘convergence majors’ to build the capacity of ERICA students in software and artificial intelligence technology.
Adding computational thinking and software expertise to artificial intelligence coding skill will certainly help students become multi-talented individuals equipped to pioneer new businesses in the future.
We hope we can help you build a future of hope the ERICA-Way.”

The software industry is a new growth engine, recently attracting plenty of attention across virtually every economic and social sector around the world. In particular, the rapidly developing software industry, ranging from smartphone applications, which have become an integral part of our lives now, to operating systems (OS) and artificial intelligence, is considered a key driver of high added value in the future. In the rapidly evolving software market, the need for experts capable of pioneering future technologies is also growing.
Our department is equipped with an outstanding infrastructure that includes state-of-the-art classrooms available exclusively to our students, sufficient space to develop software, and startup support, as well as the best curriculum, which we use to train the best software experts in the country.

Artificial intelligence technologies such as AlphaGo, autonomous driving cars, digital assistants powered by artificial intelligence, chatbots, and automatic translation services are already deeply embedded in some parts of our lives, and will come to occupy a much larger part of our lives going forward.
Defining artificial intelligence in one word may well be impossible, but if we were to summarize it in one sentence, it could be “a machine or computer with intelligence that can think and act similarly to humans.”
In order to make computers think and act similarly to humans, we need to research the structure and operating principles of the human brain, the process by which humans learn, and technologies that enable computers to mimic learning methods similar to the way human brains do.
The Department of Artificial Intelligence aims to develop individuals who can change the future by properly understanding and developing artificial intelligence technology. It provides artificial intelligence-related mathematics education such as probability and statistics, computer system-related education to help understand the structure and principles of computers, various programming education for software development, education to teach data collection/analysis/visualization, and it also provides a very systematic curriculum for each grade, including advanced artificial intelligence education such as machine learning, deep learning, reinforcement learning, and optimization.
Moreover, in order to offer the best curriculum, the department is equipped with the best educational infrastructure, including cutting-edge classrooms, dedicated labs, space for creative collaborations (e.g. SOFTWARE FACTORY), and the nation's most advanced artificial intelligence-driven supercomputer.
The department is ready to support creative students willing to take on new challenges who dream of founding the DeepMind of Korea using the infrastructure and support programs available for future startups.

In modern society, there is a growing demand for not only experts who demonstrate outstanding skills in one field, but also multi-talented individuals who can create new technologies by connecting knowledge in different fields.
In particular, there is a severe shortage of convergence engineers who can combine other fields with software, which has recently seen a rapid rise in demand across multiple industries.
In keeping with such trend, the division produces global leaders who meet the needs of the times through innovative education that promotes research that merges computing-based engineering with new fields such as various media, culture, and design.
