Applied physics is a discipline that applies the knowledge of physics and its research methods to pioneer new areas that humanity and society realistically need. It connects pure academic research and the developing of new technologies.
Applied physics has close ties to the next-generation semiconductor, display, nanobio, and nano-IT fields, which are considered Korea's growth engines for the future.
In particular, the applied physics major at Hanyang University specializes in the field of information device physics, focusing on semiconductor physics, optics, quantum mechanics, and information theory, as well as cutting-edge scientific technologies such as the production and characteristics of nanodevices, information processing, and model calculation using quantum theory.
The goal is to train practically trained professionals who can think logically, which is the type of thinking required in physics, illuminate relationships between nature and human beings based on a clear understanding of nature, and pioneer the era of globalization.
To this end, the department offers a curriculum that highlights experiments and practical applications, and encourages goal-driven learning as well as academic inquiries done autonomously by students.
The applied physics major consists of foundational subjects such as mechanics, electricity and magnetism, quantum physics, modern physics, and thermal physics, in addition to applied subjects such as information device physics, applied optics, semiconductor physics and processes, computational physics, applied acoustics, and signal processing. The program helps students develop an understanding of basic principles and the ability to apply them in real life.
Moreover, the program is equipped with a laboratory where students can learn information device physics through hands-on experiments and a computational physics labs that offers easy access to students.

The Department of Molecular Life Science teaches subjects on the cutting-edge of life sciences essential in sustaining life, from the molecular level to cells and tissues. The department studies the structure and function of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and nucleic acids, which are essential components of life, and their metabolism in vivo. Here, students get to learn mechanisms related to metabolism and regulation in a living entity, and gain insight in the development, differentiation, and growth of tissues and living organisms.
To this end, the department has a curriculum that includes practical courses in biochemistry, molecular biology, metabolism, cell physiology, immunology, signal transduction and epigenetics, embryology, and biology.
With these programs, the department's goal academically is to produce expert researchers for the life sciences field, who are high in demand in today’s cutting-edge society. These researchers are expected to contribute to the development of life sciences in both Korea and abroad from for stakeholders in various industries, the academia, and research.
In order to train specialized researchers in the field of life sciences and to offer the theoretical teachings and laboratory training that are essential in producing researchers, each laboratory is equipped with the latest lab equipment and operates under the supervision of a full-time faculty member.

The Department of Chemical and Molecular Engineering was established in 2017 as part of the PRIME initiative, and is expected to achieve some remarkable growth in the future.
Chemical and molecular engineering is a discipline that pursues advanced convergence chemical engineering using principles gleaned from pure science.
It differentiates itself from pure chemistry, which is a field of natural science that deals with the properties, composition, structure, and changes of substances, or chemical engineering, which involves converting various chemical reactants into industrially producible substances.
Based on the university’s commitment toward providing the best chemical and molecular engineering education in the country, the department features highly competent professors as well as the most advanced education and research environment in Korea.
With its well-organized education and a seamless operating system, the department is maturing into a department that introduces new paradigms in the fields of chemistry, chemical engineering, and biomaterials engineering at home and abroad.
The Department of Chemical and Molecular Engineering has took on a massive challenge that is geared toward building a new future.
It will do its best to pioneer education and research in promising new industries that are expected to grow rapidly in the future in line with the growth and development of our country's science and technology.

As a department that can meet the needs of the times, which is to train experts in the Internet of Things (IoT), nano semiconductors, LED displays, and lasers, which are expected to face greater demand from a technological standpoint in the future, the Department of Photonics and Nanoelectronics is a cross between basic science and engineering.
Previously, a few universities tried spinning off photonics as an independent discipline, but Hanyang University’s Department of Photonics and Nanoelectronics is the first of its kind in Korea to be established as a department that offers convergence education that blends in engineering.
The department offers provides specialized education in three distinct tracks: the “IoT Optical Engineering,” “Nano Semiconductor,” and “Laser Optical Engineering.”
In particular, what is noteworthy is that creativity and active problem-solving skills are honed through not only theoretical, but also practical and hands-on education involving lab projects.
Moreover, the program has a capstone project, which blends the knowledge students earn over the course of their studies, and undergraduate students participate in cutting-edge research conducted in either a Spectroscopy Lab, Computational Quantum Materials Lab, Semiconductor Photon Applications Lab, Advanced Laser Lab, Nanomaterial Characteristics Lab, Spectroscopy Lab, etc. This helps to improve their ability to apply what they learn and provides some much-needed research and development experience.
In collaboration with the Next-generation Photonics Technology Center on campus, the department provide hands-on training in cutting-edge technologies, and offers students space for creative experiments - the Nano Photonics Studio - where they can try out their own designs, which is equipped with 3D printers and various computer software.
