Department of Korean Language and Literature

The Department of Korean Language and Literature aims to train experts in linguistics and literary knowledge, as well as creative individuals who can apply Korean language and literature for more practical purposes. It also hopes to give students who can introduce and promote the Korean language, Korean literature, and culture to others in Korea and abroad.
To this end, in addition to teaching classical literature, modern literature, and Korean linguistics, the department focuses on ways to put language and literature into practical use.
Over the first two years, students focus on foundational and core subjects that count toward their majors and they build foundational skills in Korean literature and Korean language. Then, in the 3rd and 4th years, students delve deeper into their major and study practical subjects using the knowledge they have acquired.
In doing so, students build their capacity suited to Industry 4.0.
In particular, Capstone Design is a required subject, which ties the curriculum back to the industry. Recently, theory-driven courses have also been taught as part of the Industry Coupled-Problem Based Learning (IC-PBL) program, allowing students to learn academic theories and put them into practical use at the same time. By learning how to apply their knowledge, students get a better understanding of how to use what they learn in class once they are put in an industrial setting.
Additionally, the department has inter-disciplinary and practical subjects such as data and humanities, cultural archetypes and storytelling, literature and psychology, media literacy, language information processing, Korean language education for foreigners, Korean culture education for foreigners, publication planning, and drama writing to make programs more competitive in the real world.
Upon graduation, students can go on to graduate school in education and work as a professor, a secondary school teacher, a Korean language teacher for foreigners, or a counselor. Students can also work as a journalist or producer at a newspaper or broadcasting company, a broadcast writer, a web novel writer, or a publisher, etc. Alternatively, students may explore careers in academic consulting or corporate public relations.
