Department of Cultural Anthropology
In the department, classes are largely centered on archeology and cultural anthropology. Archeology focuses on restoring past culture and identifying cultural changes by excavating and analyzing prehistoric remains and relics left behind by humankind, whereas the cultural anthropology major digs into understanding the universality and specificity of humanity by directly visiting, observing, and studying people from various cultures across the globe.
Upon graduation, students may enter academia in the archeology field or work as a museum/art curator and an expert on the exhibition of cultural assets, cultural heritage, and relics. For those that major in cultural anthropology, students may work areas related to multiculturalism, the cultural industry, cultural policy, international cooperation, or media and culture.
In addition to academic pursuits, the department offers a variety of field trips and hands-on activities done among students.
Students engage in practical research every year in the spring and autumn at home and abroad, which gives them the opportunity to really experience the knowledge they had learned inside classrooms first-hand in real life.
Additionally, with activities led by the student council and research groups, students can tour archaeological digs, museum exhibitions, and urban districts undergoing renovation or regeneration.
Thus, the department provides specialized cultural anthropology training, and the opportunity for extensive field training that students had never had before.
